There are certain peculiarities in the French reception of Max Weber's works, particularly in respect to methodological issues. As part of this reception, Weber's theory of causality has been interpreted in the light of the contradistinction between determinism and freedom and instrumentalized within the context of the dispute between methodological individualism and holism, leading thus to a distorted representation and systematic misunderstanding. Through the critique of this French interpretation, this article aims to point out the significance of theories of probability for Weber's view of historical causality and the independence of his methodological position, which does not need to rely on ontological presuppositions. In the course of the argument, it becomes clear just how inadequate as a frame of reference the overemphasized, traditional opposition of natural sciences and humanities, which informs most controversies surrounding Weber's methodological positions, really is for reaching a proper understanding of the ends of knowledge in Weber's sociology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
