The lively voice of Critical Theory
The Berlin Journal of Critical Theory (BJCT) is a peer-reviewed journal (editorial review) that is published in both electronic and print formats by Xenomoi Verlag in Berlin. The goal is to focus on the critical theory of the first generation of the Frankfurt School and to extend its theories to our age. Unfortunately, it seems that most of the concerns and theories of the first generation of the Frankfurt School are neglected in its second and third generations.
We believe that the theories of the early Frankfurt School are still capable of explaining many social, cultural, and political problems of our time. However, in some cases, those theories must be revised. For example, the culture industry in our time can also work through different mechanisms from those described by Adorno and Horkheimer. In our age, the majority can access the media and even respond to the messages they receive – this is something that was not possible in Adorno and Horkheimer’s time. But this doesn’t mean that the culture industry's domination is over. Thus, we must revise the theory of the culture industry in order to explain new forms of cultural domination in our age.
The BJCT, therefore, plans to connect the theories of the first generation of the Frankfurt school with the problems of our age. To reach our goals, we have gathered some of the leading scholars of critical theory on our editorial board who will select original and high-quality articles for this journal.
This is an open-access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of open access. The license permitted is CC BY-NC-ND, ie. you are free to share, copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format. We will not revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms. For the indicated license, the authors retain the copyright and full publishing rights without restrictions. We screen article submissions routinely for plagiarism. We do not charge any fee to publish an article in the journal.
