Study Shows Eco-Friendly Wastewater Treatment Saves Money and Fights Climate Change

A new study by Colorado State University researchers shows that switching to greener ways of treating wastewater in the United States could be good for both the environment and the wallet. The research, led by Braden Limb, a Ph.D. student, looked at the possibility of using carbon offsets to pay for improvements in wastewater treatment infrastructure. Nature's Way The study suggests that using natural solutions like building wetlands and planting trees could save $15.6 billion and prevent nearly 30 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions over 40 years. This would be achieved by moving away from traditional methods that rely on a lot of concrete and machinery, and towards more natural approaches. Limb says this research is a good starting point for figuring out how to use green solutions

Novel Approach to Assess Microplastics in EU Drinking Water

A novel methodology developed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) aims to facilitate compliance with the EU Drinking Water Directive by enhancing the monitoring of microplastics in tap water across the European Union. Our daily requirement of about one and a half liters of water is crucial for maintaining bodily functions. However, the presence of minute plastic particles, known as 'microplastics,' in our drinking water raises concerns about potential health implications. Despite growing awareness of their presence, uncertainties persist regarding their impact on human health, largely due to inadequate understanding of their prevalence and distribution in water supplies. To address this, European drinking water regulations offer legal frameworks for monitoring emerging pollutants on a

Saving Water Starts with You

For some people, water has never been a challenge in their day-to-day lives. This is mainly because they are living in communities where water is easily accessible. For them it’s simple – they turn on the tap and clean water just flows, every time, every day of the year. This makes it difficult for them to acknowledge the challenges experienced by people in other parts of the world when it comes to getting hold of a few drops of water – realizing the real value of water. In developing countries, people can only access water from flowing streams, many of which are sometimes contaminated, leading to water-borne diseases. The lack of quality water also endangers proper handling of human waste and sewage, resulting to stagnant, dirty water – a welcoming environment for mosquitoes and other
